Non-Pharmacological Strategies and Approaches for the Nervous System

Uncover non-pharmacological strategies to support the nervous system and enhance your well-being naturally.

Abstract

This educational post explores the complex physiological mechanisms behind panic attacks, particularly when triggered by seemingly healthy activities like sauna use or high-intensity exercise. From the perspective of an integrative care provider, I will explain why your body may be misinterpreting these stimuli as threats, leading to a state of high alert. We will delve into the role of the amygdala, the body’s alarm center, and how its circuitry can become “hardwired” for panic. This article presents a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy to rewire this circuitry. We will cover immediate, mechanical techniques like the physiological sigh to reset the vagus nerve, the importance of nasal breathing to improve CO2 tolerance, and targeted nutritional supplementation with agents like magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, and taurine tto support a calmer nervous system biochemically Furthermore, we will explore advanced peptide therapies, including Selank and BPC-157, for their roles in enhancing GABAergic function and repairing the crucial gut-brain axis. Finally, I will outline how to reintegrate activities like sauna and cardio through a gradual, titrated approach, teaching the brain that physiological arousal is not synonymous with danger. This post will also highlight how our multidisciplinary team at Injury Medical Clinic, which combines my expertise in chiropractic and functional medicine with the medical oversight of Dr. Maria Guadalupe Cardenas, MD, provides a robust framework for managing and resolving such complex neurological and physiological conditions.

Our Collaborative Care Model at Injury Medical Clinic

Before we dive into the intricacies of panic and nervous system regulation, I believe it is essential to provide some context about our unique clinical environment. At Injury Medical Clinic PA, we have fostered a truly integrative and multidisciplinary practice designed to provide comprehensive care that addresses the whole person, not just isolated symptoms. This model is built on collaboration, expertise, and a shared commitment to patient-centered, evidence-based outcomes.

I am Dr. Alex Jimenez, and my journey in healthcare has led me to pursue a wide range of credentials, including Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC), and certifications in functional medicine (CFMP, IFMCP), among others. This diverse background allows me to view health through multiple lenses—from the structural and neurological integrity emphasized in chiropractic care to the systemic, biochemical focus of functional medicine.

A cornerstone of our practice’s success and a critical component of our ability to provide comprehensive medical care is our collaboration with Dr. Maria Guadalupe Cardenas, MD. Dr. Cardenas is a highly respected, Board-Certified Internist with over 40 years of invaluable experience. She serves as our Medical Director and Collaborative Physician, providing essential medical oversight and guidance. Her NPI number is 1164426749, and she is licensed to practice in Texas under license number J2933. This partnership between a Doctor of Chiropractic/Functional Medicine Practitioner and a Medical Doctor is a powerful synergy. It allows us to legally and ethically integrate a broad spectrum of services, including medical diagnostics, prescription management when necessary, and advanced therapies, all under one roof.

Our team at Injury Medical Clinic works cohesively to blend:

  • Chiropractic Care: Focusing on spinal alignment, nervous system function, and musculoskeletal health.
  • Medical Oversight (Internal Medicine): Provided by Dr. Cardenas, ensuring all treatment plans are medically sound, safe, and appropriate.
  • Functional Medicine: Investigating and addressing the root causes of chronic conditions by looking at genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors.
  • Personal Injury and Rehabilitation: Specializing in recovery from accidents and injuries with tailored physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols.
  • Nutritional and Wellness Counseling: Creating personalized plans to support the body’s natural healing processes.

This integrated model is particularly effective for conditions like chronic panic and anxiety, where the root causes are often multifactorial, involving structural, neurological, biochemical, and psychological components. Dr. Cardenas’s medical expertise ensures we can rule out or manage underlying medical conditions that may contribute to symptoms. At the same time, my focus on chiropractic and functional medicine allows us to implement holistic strategies that restore balance to the body’s interconnected systems. From this integrated perspective, I want to share my clinical insights on understanding and overcoming panic.

The Panic Paradox: When Healthy Habits Trigger a Threat Response

As a clinician, I often see patients who are frustrated and confused. They are actively trying to improve their health through exercise, sauna sessions, or other wellness practices, only to find these activities triggering overwhelming panic attacks. A common sentiment I hear is, “I used to love my high-intensity workouts, but now, the moment my heart starts pounding, I feel like I’m going to die. I can’t even sit in a sauna for more than a few minutes without spiraling into panic.” If this sounds familiar, I want to start by reassuring you: you are not broken. What you are experiencing is a physiological phenomenon—your nervous system has become stuck on red alert.

To understand this, we need to talk about the amygdala. The amygdala is a small, almond-shaped cluster of nuclei located deep within the temporal lobes of your brain. It is a primitive and powerful part of your limbic system, often referred to as the brain’s alarm center or “smoke detector.” Its primary job is to process and respond to potential threats in your environment rapidly. When the amygdala perceives a threat—whether it’s a real danger like a speeding car or a perceived one like an angry email from your boss—it triggers the fight-or-flight response. This involves a cascade of hormonal and physiological changes, including a surge of adrenaline, an increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and heightened senses, all designed to prepare you to either confront the danger or flee from it.

Here is where the problem begins for individuals experiencing panic attacks during exercise or sauna use. Activities like high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or sitting in a hot sauna naturally and healthily increase your heart rate, cause you to sweat, and make you breathe faster. These are normal, adaptive physiological responses. However, in a dysregulated nervous system, the amygdala begins to misinterpret these internal bodily sensations. It mistakes the rapid heartbeat from a sprint on the treadmill for the rapid heartbeat of a genuine life-or-death threat. It cannot differentiate between the physiological arousal of exercise and the physiological arousal of terror.

In this state of hypervigilance, the amygdala pulls the panic alarm. This is, in essence, a false alarm. But the feelings it produces—the racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, and intense fear—are terrifyingly real. Over time, through a process known as classical conditioning, your brain creates a powerful, hardwired association. The sauna becomes linked with panic. The gym becomes linked with panic. The very sensations of a healthy, beating heart become a trigger. This is not a failure of willpower or a character flaw; it is a reinforced neurological circuit that now fires automatically. The challenge, therefore, is not to “think” your way out of it but to actively and systematically rewire that circuitry. This is where our integrative approach, combining mechanical techniques, biochemical support, and strategic therapies, becomes so powerful.

Mechanical Reset: The Power of the Physiological Sigh

When you are in the throes of a panic attack or feel one beginning, rational thought goes out the window. This is because the amygdala and the sympathetic nervous system have hijacked your brain, pulling resources away from the prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain responsible for logic, reason, and executive function. This is why you cannot outthink a panic attack. Trying to reason with yourself in that moment is like trying to have a calm, logical conversation with someone whose house is on fire. The primal, survival-oriented parts of the brain are in full control.

So our first line of defense must be mechanical, not cognitive. We need a tool that can directly intervene in the physiological cascade of panic. The most effective, evidence-based tool I have found for this is the physiological sigh. This is not just a deep breath; it is a specific breathing pattern with a profound, immediate effect on the nervous system. Dr. David Spiegel and Dr. Andrew Huberman at Stanford University extensively researched the technique and demonstrated its superior ability to calm the nervous system compared to other breathing methods (Balban et al., 2023).

How to Perform the Physiological Sigh

The technique is simple but precise:

  1. Take two sharp, successive inhales through your nose without fully exhaling in between. The first inhale should be the main one, filling your lungs, and the second, shorter inhale “tops it off,” further expanding the tiny air sacs in your lungs.
  2. Follow this with a long, slow, and complete exhale through your mouth. Make the exhale noticeably longer than the combined inhales.

So, it looks and sounds like this: (sharp inhale through nose), (shorter, sharp inhale through nose) … (long, slow exhale through mouth).

Why It Works: The Vagus Nerve and Alveoli

The magic of the physiological sigh lies in its direct impact on your anatomy and physiology.

  • Maximizing Gas Exchange: Your lungs are not just empty balloons; they are filled with hundreds of millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Here, the crucial exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. When you are stressed or anxious, your breathing often becomes shallow, causing some of these alveoli to collapse. This reduces the efficiency of gas exchange, which can lead to a buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood—a state that itself can trigger feelings of anxiety and air hunger. The double inhale of the physiological sigh forcefully re-inflates these collapsed alveoli, maximizing the surface area available for oxygen to enter the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to be expelled.
  • Vagus Nerve Stimulation: The long, slow exhale is the key to calming the nervous system. It directly stimulates the vagus nerve, the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s “rest and digest” system. When your heart rate increases during a fight-or-flight response, sensors in your arteries (baroreceptors) detect the change. As you exhale slowly, your heart rate naturally slows down. The vagus nerve detects this deceleration and sends a signal to your brain that says, “The threat is over. It’s safe to stand down.” This acts as a powerful brake on the panic response.

This is a biological vagus nerve reset. It is an intrinsic, built-in mechanism that our bodies use to regulate states of arousal. In my practice, I find this to be the single most effective acute intervention for panic.

Clinical Application Protocol

To begin rewiring the panic association with activities like sauna use, I recommend a structured protocol:

  • Perform five cycles of the physiological sigh immediately before you enter the sauna. This primes your nervous system for calm.
  • If you feel the initial stirrings of panic while inside the sauna (your heart rate increasing, a sense of unease), perform one to three cycles of the physiological sigh. This will act as an immediate circuit breaker.
  • Perform another five cycles immediately after you get out of the sauna. This helps your nervous system return to baseline gracefully and reinforces the message that the experience was safe.

By consistently applying this mechanical tool, you are actively intervening in the old, hardwired panic loop and beginning to create a new, calmer association.

The Overlooked Role of CO2 and the Importance of Nasal Breathing

While the physiological sigh is a powerful tool for acute moments of panic, a long-term strategy requires addressing the nervous system’s underlying sensitivity. One of the most critical, yet often overlooked, factors in panic disorder is carbon dioxide (CO2) tolerance.

Many people mistakenly believe that CO2 is simply a waste product to be expelled from the body as quickly as possible. However, CO2 plays a vital role in regulating our physiology. One of its most important functions is facilitating the release of oxygen from hemoglobin in the blood into our tissues and organs, a phenomenon known as the Bohr effect. Without sufficient CO2 levels in the blood, oxygen remains “stuck” to hemoglobin, and our cells can become starved of oxygen, even if we are breathing heavily.

This leads to a state of “air hunger,” a desperate feeling that you cannot get enough air, which is a hallmark symptom of a panic attack. Chronic mouth breathing, especially during exercise, is a primary culprit in lowering CO2 tolerance.

Mouth Breathing vs. Nasal Breathing

  • Mouth Breathing: When you breathe through your mouth, you tend to take faster, shallower breaths. This “over-breathing” expels too much CO2, lowering blood CO2 levels (hypocapnia). To correct this, your body may trigger vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels), which can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. The brain interprets this constellation of symptoms—air hunger, dizziness, and a racing heart from the effort of over-breathing—as a sign of danger, triggering a panic response. Over time, your brain’s chemoreceptors, which monitor blood gas levels, become hypersensitive to even small increases in CO2. When CO2 levels rise naturally during exercise, these sensitive receptors sound the alarm and trigger the panic cascade.
  • Nasal Breathing: Breathing through your nose, on the other hand, is a game-changer. The nasal passages are specifically designed to warm, humidify, and filter the air you breathe. More importantly, they provide natural resistance, which forces you to breathe more slowly and deeply. This slower breathing allows CO2 to accumulate to optimal levels in your blood. This, in turn, improves oxygen delivery to your tissues, promotes a state of calm via the parasympathetic nervous system, and, crucially, it trains your chemoreceptors to become less sensitive and more tolerant to natural fluctuations in CO2. Nasal breathing also promotes nitric oxide (NO) production in the paranasal sinuses. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator (it widens blood vessels) and bronchodilator (it widens airways), further improving oxygenation and lowering blood pressure.

A New Approach to Cardio

For anyone struggling with exercise-induced panic, my primary recommendation is to shift to nasal breathing only during all cardio sessions. This may feel difficult and restrictive at first, and you will likely have to reduce the intensity of your workouts significantly. That is okay. The goal is no longer to hit a max heart rate; it’s to retrain your nervous system.

I suggest spending at least two to three weeks doing only Zone 2 cardio with strict nasal breathing. Zone 2 is a low-to-moderate intensity level where you can comfortably maintain a conversation. For most people, this is around 60-70% of their maximum heart rate. By staying in this zone and breathing only through your nose, you are teaching your body and brain several important lessons:

  1. You are improving your CO2 tolerance, making your nervous system more resilient to panic triggers.
  2. You are improving your metabolic efficiency and your body’s ability to use fat for fuel.
  3. You are proving to your amygdala, rep by rep, breath by breath, that an elevated heart rate and physiological arousal can occur in a safe and controlled context.

After several weeks of consistent nasal-only training, you can gradually reintroduce higher intensities, always prioritizing nasal breathing for as long as possible and switching to mouth breathing only when necessary. This systematic approach desensitizes the panic response and rebuilds your confidence.

Biochemical Anchors: Targeted Supplementation to Calm a Hypersensitive Nervous System

A nervous system stuck on red alert is not just a psychological issue; it is a biochemical one. It is often characterized by an imbalance between excitatory neurotransmitters (like glutamate and norepinephrine) and inhibitory neurotransmitters (like GABA). It is a state of electrical hyperexcitability, where neurons are firing too easily and too often. Imagine a guitar string that is wound too tightly—the slightest touch causes it to vibrate wildly. Our goal with targeted supplementation is to “loosen that string,” providing the biochemical resources your body needs to restore equilibrium.

Based on my clinical experience and a wealth of research, I recommend a specific stack of nutrients to take about 30 minutes before any activity that could provoke panic, such as a sauna session or a workout.

1. Magnesium Glycinate: The Anti-Panic Anchor

  • Recommended Dose: 400 milligrams
  • Mechanism of Action: Magnesium is arguably the most important mineral for nervous system regulation. It acts as a natural calcium channel blocker. Calcium is essential for neuronal firing; it flows into the neuron to trigger neurotransmitter release. In an anxious state, calcium often floods in excessively, leading to neuronal hyperexcitability. Magnesium sits in the gate of the NMDA receptor, a primary receptor for the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. By “guarding” this gate, magnesium prevents excessive activation by glutamate, thereby calming neuronal firing. I recommend magnesium glycinate because it is bound to the amino acid glycine. Glycine itself acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brainstem and spinal cord, adding another layer of calming effect. This form is also highly bioavailable and gentle on the digestive system, unlike other forms like magnesium oxide.

2. L-Theanine: Boosting Your Brain’s Off Switch

  • Recommended Dose: 200 milligrams
  • Mechanism of Action: L-theanine is a unique amino acid found primarily in green tea. Its primary benefit for anxiety and panic is its ability to increase the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is the brain’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter—it is your brain’s “off switch” or “brake pedal.” It works by binding to GABA receptors on neurons, which opens chloride channels. The influx of negatively charged chloride ions makes the neuron less likely to fire, reducing overall brain activity and promoting relaxation without sedation. L-theanine has also been shown to increase alpha brain waves, which are associated with a state of “wakeful relaxation,” the kind you might experience during meditation (Hidese et al., 2019). This makes it ideal to take before an activity when you want to be calm but still alert and focused.

3. Taurine: Stabilizing Heart Rhythm and Blunting Adrenaline

  • Recommended Dose: 2 grams (2000 milligrams)
  • Mechanism of Action: Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is highly concentrated in the heart, brain, and muscles. Its role in preventing panic is multifaceted.
  • Cardiac Stabilization: Panic attacks are often driven by the fear of a racing heart (tachycardia) or irregular heartbeats (palpitations). Taurine helps to stabilize the heart’s electrical rhythm by regulating the flow of calcium and potassium ions in and out of cardiac muscle cells. This can help prevent the palpitations that often trigger a panic spiral (Schaffer & Kim, 2018).
  • GABAergic Support: Like L-theanine, taurine can also bind to GABA receptors and enhance GABAergic inhibition, contributing to a calmer central nervous system.
  • Adrenaline Blunting: Perhaps most importantly, taurine has been shown to blunt the surge of adrenaline (epinephrine) from the adrenal glands during a stress response. By dampening this adrenaline spike, taurine can significantly reduce the intensity of the physical symptoms of panic—the pounding heart, sweating, and trembling.

Taking these three supplements—magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, and taurine—together about 30 minutes before a triggering activity creates a powerful biochemical buffer. It is like giving your nervous system a suit of armor before heading into battle. It does not eliminate the trigger, but it dramatically reduces your system’s reactivity, giving you the physiological space to use your breathing techniques and consciously reframe the experience.

System Reboot: Advanced Peptide Therapies for Long-Term Resilience

While the strategies discussed so far are incredibly effective for managing symptoms and beginning the retraining process, some individuals with a deeply entrenched panic response need to go a step further and reboot the entire system. In functional medicine, we are always looking for the most upstream interventions that can create the most profound and lasting change. This is where advanced therapies, such as specific peptides, can play a transformative role.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the body. They are highly specific and can have powerful regulatory effects on various physiological systems. The following peptides are ones I have found to be particularly effective in building long-term resilience against anxiety and panic. Use these therapies only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider, such as the integrated team at our clinic.

1. Selank: The Anxiety-Quieting Peptide

  • Recommended Dose: 500 micrograms, administered via nasal spray, no later than 4:00 PM.
  • Mechanism of Action: Selank is a synthetic peptide based on a naturally occurring human peptide called tuftsin. It is classified as a GABAergic peptide, meaning its primary action is to modulate the GABA system positively. Unlike benzodiazepine drugs, which also target the GABA system but can cause sedation, dependence, and cognitive impairment, Selank offers a unique advantage. It quiets anxiety without any sedation. It works by influencing GABA synthesis and breakdown, leading to a more balanced and robust inhibitory system. It also has been shown to modulate the expression of neurotrophic factors like Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which supports the growth, survival, and plasticity of neurons (Volkova et al., 2016). This means it not only calms the system in the short term but also helps to build a healthier, more resilient brain architecture over the long term.
    • The reason I recommend taking it no later than 4:00 PM is that, for some individuals, its anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effect can be subtly energizing or focusing. Taking it too late in the day could potentially interfere with sleep onset. Taking it earlier allows it to establish a calm, stable baseline for your nervous system throughout the day, making you less susceptible to evening triggers. It is, in my clinical opinion, one of our best weapons for building lasting resilience against panic and anxiety.

2. BPC-157: Healing the Gut-Brain Vagal Connection

  • Recommended Dose: 500 micrograms, twice a day (oral or subcutaneous injection).
  • Mechanism of Action: BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a peptide known for its profound systemic healing and regenerative properties. While often used for musculoskeletal injuries, its effects on the gut-brain axis are particularly relevant for anxiety and panic disorders.
    • The gut is often called our “second brain” for good reason. It contains hundreds of millions of neurons (the enteric nervous system) and is in constant communication with the brain in your head via the vagus nerve. This communication is a two-way street. Your brain can send stress signals that affect gut function (leading to “nervous stomach” or IBS-like symptoms), but just as importantly, your gut can send signals of distress and inflammation up to the brain.
    • Gut inflammation, intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”), or dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut bacteria) can lead to the production of inflammatory molecules and bacterial byproducts that travel up the vagus nerve or through the bloodstream to the brain. When these signals reach the brain, they can directly activate the amygdala and other stress centers, effectively putting your nervous system on high alert. Your gut is literally telegraphing distress to your brain’s alarm center.
    • BPC-157 is a powerful agent for sealing and healing the gut lining. It promotes repair of tight junctions (the seals between intestinal cells), reduces gut inflammation, and can help rebalance the gut microbiome (Sikiric et al., 2017). By “sealing that line” of communication, BPC-157 stops the constant stream of inflammatory signals from the gut to the brain. This calms the amygdala from the bottom up, lowering the overall baseline level of anxiety and making the nervous system less reactive.

3. KPV: A Potent Anti-Inflammatory Signal

  • Recommended Dose: 1 milligram per day (oral or topical).
  • Mechanism of Action: KPV is a tripeptide (a chain of three amino acids) that is a fragment of a larger hormone called alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (?-MSH). Its primary and most potent function is as an anti-inflammatory agent. Chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation is a major contributing factor to a lowered nervous system threshold. Inflammation is like background noise that keeps your entire system on edge, making it more likely to overreact to stimuli. KPV works by entering the nucleus of inflammatory cells and inhibiting the signaling pathways (like NF-?B) that drive the production of inflammatory cytokines. By knocking out this systemic inflammation, KPV effectively raises your nervous system’s threshold for activation. It calms the “background noise,” making your system less prone to false alarms and more resilient to stress.

Integrating these peptide therapies, under proper medical supervision, can fundamentally shift the underlying physiology that perpetuates the cycle of panic and anxiety, creating a foundation of true, lasting neurological and biochemical resilience.

The Chiropractic Connection: Structural Integrity and Nervous System Regulation

Integrating chiropractic care into this comprehensive model is crucial. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I see firsthand how the body’s structural integrity, particularly the spine, directly influences nervous system function. The spine houses and protects the spinal cord, which is the main highway of communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Misalignments or dysfunctions in the spinal column, which we call vertebral subluxations, can interfere with this communication system.

This interference can manifest as physical tension and irritation to the delicate nerves exiting the spine, including those that feed into the sympathetic chain ganglia—a series of nerve clusters that run parallel to the spine and are critical components of the fight-or-flight response. Chronic irritation in these areas, particularly in the upper cervical (neck) and upper thoracic (mid-back) regions, can lead to sympathetic dominance. This means the “gas pedal” of your nervous system is perpetually pressed down, contributing to the background state of high alert that makes panic attacks more likely.

Chiropractic adjustments are specific, gentle forces applied to dysfunctional spinal joints to restore proper motion and alignment. The benefits in the context of panic and anxiety are twofold:

  1. Mechanical Relief: By correcting subluxations, we can reduce physical tension on the nervous system. This can directly decrease the aberrant signaling that promotes a state of sympathetic dominance. Many of my patients report an immediate sense of relaxation and ease after an adjustment, as this “static” on the line is cleared.
  2. Vagal Tone Improvement: Research has shown that chiropractic adjustments, particularly to the upper cervical spine, can positively influence vagal tone. The vagus nerve exits the brainstem and passes in proximity to the top vertebrae of the neck (the atlas and axis). Misalignment in this critical area can potentially interfere with vagal nerve function. By restoring proper alignment, we can improve vagus nerve function, enhancing the body’s ability to shift into the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. This directly supports the other strategies we have discussed, such as the physiological sigh, in building a more robust and responsive parasympathetic system.

In our clinic, chiropractic care is not an isolated treatment. It is an integral part of the overall strategy to re-regulate the nervous system, working in concert with the medical oversight from Dr. Cardenas, the biochemical interventions of functional medicine, and the targeted rehabilitation protocols we design for each patient.

Putting It All Together: The Gradual Re-Exposure Protocol

The final and perhaps most important piece of the puzzle is the behavioral component. You have the tools to manage an acute event, the biochemical support to calm your system, and the advanced therapies to reboot it. Now, you must systematically prove to your brain that arousal is not danger. This requires a gradual, intelligent approach to re-engaging with the activities that once triggered you. You cannot go from zero to one hundred.

For the Sauna:

  • Start Small: Begin with a duration you know you can handle without panic, even if it is only three to five minutes. The goal is to end the session before panic sets in. You want to get out feeling successful and in control.
  • Focus on Breathing: While inside, practice slow, rhythmic nasal breathing. If you feel your heart rate climb and anxiety begin to bubble up, immediately perform a physiological sigh.
  • Cool Down Mindfully: After you get out, do not rush to the next thing. Take a few minutes to cool down. Practice your five cycles of the physiological sigh. Notice the sensation of your heart rate gradually returning to normal. Reinforce the message: “My body got warm, my heart rate went up, and now it’s coming back down. I am safe.”
  • Incrementally Increase: Once you can comfortably complete five minutes for several sessions in a row, increase the duration to seven minutes. Then ten. The key is to make the increases small enough that your nervous system can adapt without sounding the alarm.

For Cardio:

  • Embrace Zone 2: As discussed, dedicate two to three weeks to low-intensity, Zone 2 cardio with strict nasal breathing only. No max efforts. No sprints. The goal is not a performance metric; it is neurological retraining.
  • Monitor and Adapt: Pay attention to your body. If you feel yourself getting anxious, slow down even more. Focus on the rhythmic nature of your movement and your breath.
  • Gradually Introduce Intensity: After your Zone 2 base-building phase, you can start to introduce very short bursts of higher intensity. For example, during a 30-minute session, you might do a 15-second “push” where your heart rate rises, followed by several minutes of slow recovery, all while focusing on your breathing.
  • Celebrate Arousal: Learn to reframe the sensations. When you feel your heart pounding after a short burst of effort, tell yourself, “This is my body getting stronger. This is the feeling of adaptation. This is healthy arousal, not danger.”

This process of graduated exposure combined with physiological regulation techniques is the cornerstone of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder, and it is incredibly effective. You are systematically desensitizing your amygdala and teaching your brain, through direct experience, that you are safe.

Conclusion: You Are the Architect of Your Nervous System

Overcoming a deeply ingrained panic response is a journey. It requires a multi-pronged, integrative approach that honors the intricate connections between your structure, biochemistry, physiology, and psychology. It involves actively intervening with mechanical tools like the physiological sigh, re-regulating your breathing patterns, providing your body with the biochemical anchors it needs to find calm, and, when necessary, employing advanced therapies to reboot the system from the ground up.

At our clinic, under the collaborative guidance of Dr. Cardenas and me, we bring all these pieces together. We use chiropractic care to ensure your nervous system’s physical pathways are clear. We use functional medicine to address the biochemical and gut-brain imbalances. We use medical oversight to ensure safety and rule out other pathologies. And we empower you with the knowledge and tools to become the architect of your own nervous system.

Remember, your brain has an incredible capacity for change and adaptation—a property known as neuroplasticity. The same mechanisms that allowed the panic circuits to become hardwired can be used to unwire them and create new, healthier pathways. It takes work, consistency, and a little bit of patience, but by implementing these strategies, you can teach your brain that arousal is not danger, that a pounding heart can be a sign of vitality, not a threat, and that you are, and always have been, in control.

Sciatica is a collection of symptoms characterized by pain which extends down the length of the legs from the lower back. Approximately 90 percent of sciatica, or sciatic nerve pain, develops when a spinal disc herniation compresses a spinal nerve along the lumbar spine. Piriformis syndrome and pregnancy are other common causes of sciatica. Chiropractic care is an alternative, treatment option which focuses on the treatment of injuries and/or conditions associated with the musculoskeletal and nervous system. Patients describe how Dr. Alex Jimenez has helped them achieve sciatica relief through chiropractic care. Edgar M. Reyes and Truide Torres highly recommend Dr. Alex Jimenez as the non-surgical choice for sciatica.

If you’re dealing with pain after a car crash, work incident, or sports injury, you deserve a clear plan—not guesswork. I’m Dr. Alex Jimenez (DC + Nurse Practitioner), and at Injury Medical Clinic PA in El Paso, we focus on thorough evaluation, conservative care when appropriate, careful documentation, and function-based recovery so you can get back to life with confidence.

WHY DUAL-LICENSED CARE MATTERS
Injuries often involve more than “just the spine”—joints, nerves, soft tissue, mobility, sleep, and stress can all be affected. My dual training supports a broader clinical view and more coordinated decision-making, including appropriate referrals when needed.

WHAT TO EXPECT
• Detailed injury evaluation (pain source + function limits)
• Movement and stability testing (mobility, weakness, coordination)
• Structured re-exams to track measurable progress

COMMON CONDITIONS WE SEE
• Whiplash/neck pain & post-accident headaches
• Mid-back and low-back pain (with or without leg symptoms)
• Shoulder strain, rib irritation, hip/SI joint dysfunction
• Knee/ankle sprains, postural changes, reduced range of motion

TREATMENT OPTIONS (INDIVIDUALIZED)
• Chiropractic care to restore motion and joint mechanics
• Soft tissue / myofascial therapies to reduce guarding & trigger points
• Rehabilitation + corrective exercise (core stability, balance, control, endurance)

PERSONAL INJURY DOCUMENTATION
If your case involves an auto or work injury claim, we keep care organized with clear findings, progress measures, and professional records when needed.

We are excited you are taking positive steps to learn about health challenges affecting you and your family. There is the power in making educated decisions about your health by gaining high-level science-based truth and knowledge. We work to uncover the root causes of health issues. Our unique health approach uses functional wellness principles to identify and treat health issues' potential underlying causes.

Again, We Welcome You.

Our Purpose & Passions: I am a Doctor of Chiropractic specializing in progressive, cutting-edge therapies and functional rehabilitation procedures focused on clinical physiology, total health, practical strength training, and complete conditioning. We focus on restoring normal body functions after neck, back, spinal and soft tissue injuries.

We use Specialized Chiropractic Protocols, Wellness Programs, Functional & Integrative Nutrition, Agility & Mobility Fitness Training, and Rehabilitation Systems for all ages.

As an extension to effective rehabilitation, we too offer our patients, disabled veterans, athletes, and young and elder a diverse portfolio of strength equipment, high-performance exercises, and advanced agility treatment options. We have teamed up with the city’s premier doctors, therapists, and trainers to provide high-level competitive athletes the possibility to push themselves to their highest abilities within our facilities.

We’ve been blessed to use our methods with thousands of El Pasoans over the last three decades allowing us to restore our patients’ health and fitness while implementing researched non-surgical methods and functional wellness programs.

Our programs are natural and use the body’s ability to achieve specific measured goals, rather than introducing harmful chemicals, controversial hormone replacement, unwanted surgeries, or addictive drugs. We want you to live a functional life that is fulfilled with more energy, a positive attitude, better sleep, and less pain. Our goal is to ultimately empower our patients to maintain the healthiest way of living.

With a bit of work, we can achieve optimal health together, no matter the age or disability.

Join us in improving your health for you and your family.

It’s all about: LIVING, LOVING & MATTERING!

Welcome & God Bless
