Sciatica can be described as a collection of symptoms characterized by pain which extends down the length of the legs from the spine. When a disc herniation compresses a nerve along the lumbar spine, approximately 90 percent of sciatic nerve pain, or sciatica, develops. Piriformis syndrome and pregnancy are other common causes of sciatica.
